Filters for Ponds with a Waterfall
One of the
motivations for putting in a pond, especially
for those new to pond keeping, is the relaxing
sound a waterfall will bring.
Waterfalls serve a useful
purpose in addition to being a tranquil addition
by adding oxygen to the water and can also
double as a filter to keep the water clean.
A variety of waterfall additions are available.
Some are simply containers with in-takes from
the pump and a mouth that allows water to spill
out. Others are more complex and actually filter
the water. The waterfall filter you choose may
have some or all of the following benefits:
- Removing solid waste
by running water through meshes and by
incorporating settling tanks
- Removing toxins
through bio-filtration, allowing good
bacteria to eliminate the harmful chemicals
- Oxygenating water as
it spills back into the pond
The benefits of using a
waterfall filter include:
- You can add beauty
and function in one filter system
- Ability to install
multiple waterfall filters for larger ponds
- Filter is easily
hidden under rocks or landscaping
- Doesn’t take up space
in your pond
The shortcomings of
waterfall filters include:
- Medium in size,
single units are usually rated for 2000 –
5000 gallon ponds
- Difficult to clean
the filters, especially if you hide the
system under rocks or landscaping
- If your pond contains
Koi or is heavily stocked, you will need
additional biological filters to handle the
chemical imbalance fish bring
If you plan on including a
waterfall in your pond layout, make sure you
choose a pump that has an output suitable for a
waterfall.
If your waterfall filter is the only filter you
plan on using in your pond, choose one that is
capable of circulating and filtering the
totality of your pond once every two to three
hours.
If your pond is larger than one waterfall filter
can handle, consider installing more than one
waterfall filter.
