Pressurized Pond Filters

Pressurized pond filters are great for ponds under 5000 gallons.

They work by sucking water from the pond then returning the filtered water to the pump and waterfall or fountain feature.

What kinds of pond would benefit most from a pressurized pond filter?

  • Small to medium ponds, up to 5000 gallons, ideal for 600-1200 gallon ponds.
  • Ponds that do not have landscaping around the outside of the pond, since pressurized filters can be placed 10 feet or more from the pond.
  • Ponds placed for tranquility, where the humming of a filter would interrupt the mood of the pond.
  • Ponds with a waterfall or fountain.
  • Shallow ponds where a submerged filter would be noticeable.
  • Ponds with Koi or other fish
  • Locations with large grade variances, as a pressurized filter doesn’t have to be installed at water level.

What should you look for in a pressurized pond filter?

  • Size – choose a filter that is rated for between one and two times the size of your pond using the formula below:
o Gallons of water in pond / 3 = gallons per hour
    o Gallons per hour * 2 = filter size
  • UV filtration – Some pressurized filters have UV features that help maintain clear water
  • Biological filtration – Some pressurized filters contain biological media that help keep the chemicals balanced in your pond
  • Easy cleaning – Look for a pressurized pond filter that has a backwash cleaning mechanism or easy access to the filter for effortless cleaning
  • Long power cord – Add two feet to the distance between the pressurized pond filter tank and power outlet.

Two disadvantages to choosing a pressurized filter are:

  • Price – they can cost more than other easy to clean external filters and submergible filters
  • Energy – most pressurized pond filters use more energy to run than external or submerged filters
