Using Plants to Beautify and Filter your Pond

Adding water plants can be a great asset aesthetically and will also help keep your pond clean and algae free.

You have dug your hole, added all the liners, pumps and filters but still your pond seems to be missing something. And you have an algae problem you just can’t seem to filter out. It’s time for some water plants. Not only will they add to the beauty of your pond but they’ll quickly get a handle on those green algae. But where to start?

If algae has taken hold or you’re in the planning stages of a pond that will get sunlight, heat and contain nutrients, then you need some Anacharis. Anacharis is part of the aquatic plant group known as oxygenators. By taking up excessive nutrients in the pond water, they cut the supply of those nutrients to algae. But be careful, they are very tasty and Koi will eat them up if not placed behind a barrier. When you pick up Anacharis, you’ll need one bunch for every two square feet of pond space. Other oxygenators include Parrot's feather, cabomba and Milfoil.

Water lilies are a popular pond plant and for good reason. They lend a peaceful feeling to the pond while providing shade for the fish and help keep the water cool. Water lilies are among a group of plants known as deep water aquatics. Deep water aquatic plants need to be planted at least a foot deep in the proper containers.

The plants that grow on the top of the water, that seem to be floating, are known as floaters. They provide cover for fish and keep the water cool. Water hyacinth, frogbit, water lettuce and water-soldiers are some of the common floaters. One floater to be avoided is duck weed, as it is invasive and may envelope your pond.

If you have your algae under control and are simply looking for some attractive, flowering plants, you should look, for marginals. Marginals are usually planted just a few inches under the surface of the water. Irises, marsh marigold and pickerel weed are some of the popular marginals.

Once you have decided which kinds of plants you want for your pond, verify the combination you choose will grow well together. Finally, enjoy your plant filled pond.
