Koi Pond Filtration

The quality of water in your pond is vital to the health of your Koi—it is important that Koi have the proper environment in order to grow, thrive and survive.

If the filtration is correct in your pond, Koi can virtually take care of themselves.

It is important that you test your pond water regularly for ammonia and nitrates and that you change a portion of the water at regular intervals. Your pond should be properly oxygenated and your fish population should be inline with the size of your pond. Depending on the size of your pond and the fish population, using both biological and mechanical filtration is essential.

Mechanical filtering involves a filter that will catch the larger pieces of waste in your pond—this will also prevent debris from clogging your pond pump. Mechanical filters remove the debris you can see, while biological filters remove the waste and debris you cannot see.

Koi fish waste is essentially ammonia—and this can kill your Koi. It is very toxic and if too much of this ammonia substance builds up in your pond, your Koi will die. By installing a proper biological filter for your Koi pond, you will decrease the ammonia and have healthier fish.

Both methods of filtration are essential for your Koi pond. Many Koi pond kits come with suitable mechanical and biological filters—however, you should check your kit to ensure that you have the proper filtration before putting fish in your pond. It is well worth the expense of having proper filtration in place before you stock your pond with Koi fish that will die due to improper filtration.

If you have any questions regarding filtration for your Koi pond, check with your pond specialist to ensure that you have the materials necessary to keep your Koi pond healthy and filtered properly.
