Pond Filter Information on the Internet

Finding valuable information on the internet to help you with your pond decisions.

Whether one is interested in acquiring a small fish tank for the traditional goldfish or a two-hundred gallon Koi pond, the needs are pretty much the same: fish, water, fake plants (to recreate their environment) and rocks (or the odd sunken castle with the requisite buried treasure), gravel, water thermometer, fish food, and a filter. Of all these needs, the last is the only one that can be truly difficult to decide on. The kind of fish depends very much on aesthetics (and, to a large extent, the same with the decorations). Once this critical step is taken the type of water, the temperature, and the food are all pretty much predetermined. It is, then, the filter that can be the most difficult decision to make.

Intake filters, submersed filters, in-line filters, and external filters are only a few of the real “options” for the fish enthusiast. When dealing with something as small as a fish tank (especially for a couple of goldfish) the filter decision is made less ominous, but when dealing with hundreds of gallons—and the happy lives of some possibly very expensive, fishy pets—how does one go about making a decision for the good of the fish?

Probably the most common method people employ is “asking the salesman.” This has some serious drawbacks. Most notably, the whole notion of talking to the salesman whose job it is to sell you something (even if you don’t need it). Therefore, the most powerful tool the consumer has on their side is information, and there is no more powerful tool for information than the Internet.

A simple Google search reveals a number of things. First, there are sights devoted simply to selling filters—no information, no pros/cons, and no money-back guarantee. Then, there are sights devoted to promoting specific stores. These generally include information about the different kinds of filters, what the advantages are to each specific kind, and what the best methods are for using them. Finally, there are sites devoted solely to the dissemination of facts about something like “Owning Fish as a Hobby.”

The best bet for anybody looking for information on the Internet related to filtration systems for ponds is to cross-check the prices from the wholesalers with the information from the retailers and confirm this (finally) with the facts from the hobbyist sites. The information is there, and a good consumer/owner will use every bit.
