Indoor Pond Filters

There are many options when choosing a filter for your indoor pond.

Biological filters, external mechanical filters and submerged mechanical filters are each produce a different desired effect.

Biological Filters
Biological pond filters are beneficial to the pond by breaking down and converting harmful chemical waste. The more biological pond filtration you add, the more balanced your water PH will be. Lava rock, open cell foam and alfagrog sintered ceramic are all considered biological filters.

For each 1000 gallons of water in your pond, you will need:
8 gallons of lava rock OR
20 gallons of open cell foam OR
2 to 4 gallons of alfagrog sintered ceramic

The drawbacks of biological filters are:

  • They take up space in your pond
  • Cannot be used alone
  • Cleaning can be a difficult chore
  • It will not remove solid waste

External Filters
If your indoor pond is shallow and you want to keep your filter hidden from view, an external filter is your best choice. This type of filter is easiest to clean and maintain and can be hidden behind a rock or plants surrounding your pond. An external filter will keep your pond free of debris and solid waste, and if you choose an external filter that also has a biomedia built in, it can be the only filter you need.

For each 1000 gallons of water in your pond, you will need an external filter that pumps between 333 and 500 gallons per hour (GPH).

The drawbacks of external filters include:

  • They create noise
  • Water outlet cannot be attached to fountain or waterfall
  • May still require biological filter in pond

Submerged Filters
Submerged filters combine an intake filter and a water filter. The intake filter feature keeps waste from entering the pump and the water filter feature traps solids from the water. They are installed inside the pond, so you won’t have to find a place to hide it and you won’t hear the humming as much as with an external filter type. Submerged filters usually contain biomedia to help the PH balance as well.

Sizing a submerged filter is the same as an external filter.

The drawbacks of submerged filters include:

  • They are more difficult to clean than an external filter
  • They take up room in the pond
