Keeping Your Pond Filters Clean Are Critical For A Healthy Pond

In order to keep your pond looking and smelling clean and beautiful you must keep your pond filter clean.

Having an outdoor water pond is a gorgeous addition to any home’s landscape. However, if you do not keep your pond filters clean, the pond which begins as a beautiful spot will quickly turn into an area of your yard you don’t want to visit. So, when spring arrives, and the water temperature is somewhere between 40 and 55 degrees F, clean your pond filters thoroughly! Here are some simple steps to follow:

  1. Take out all media from the pond filters. Completely rinse out the filter container. Take the filter containers away from the pond area, so that any of the wastewater is not being introduced into the pond itself. Since the water of your pond at this time is quite cold, it is best if you wear some sort of protective clothing if you are required to get into your pond to retrieve your pond filters.

  2. Any filter pads, sponges and other biological media then needs to be thoroughly rinsed. Do not leave the biological media out long enough to dry out and do not introduce it to any kind of chlorinated water. If you are using any type of gravel or lava rock bio media, you should keep a record of when you purchased it so it can be replaced every three years. Any type of plastic media can be used for as long as it is able to be rinsed free of debris. Pads and sponges being used in your pond pumps that do not return to their original color after being rinsed because of dirt and other debris should be replaced, as well.

After thorough rinsing, you can reassemble your pond filters and start them up. If recommended, you can add a dose of bacterial additives to your pond to replace any that have been lost over the cold months. Read the instructions on your pond filters carefully to see how often cleaning needs to occur.
