External Pond Filters

Here are some of the reasons you would want to choose an external pond filter for your backyard pond.

When you install a pond in your yard or in your home, you want it to stay clean and beautiful. To keep the water clear and the fish, if you have any, easy to watch, you must install a pond filter. Among the types of filters for ponds are external pond filters.

Why choose an external pond filter?

  1. Choose an external filter because it will be easier to clean.
  2. Choose an external filter because it doesn’t take up valuable space in your pond.
  3. Choose an external filter because it will use less energy than either a submersible or a pressurized filter.
  4. Choose an external filter because it can go weeks or even months without cleaning.
  5. Choose an external filter because it will almost always be less expensive than pressurized tank filters and usually just a little more expensive than the submerged types.
  6. Choose an external filter because it will allow oxygen in to allow good bacteria to grow if it contains bio media used for balancing chemical PH of the water.

How do you choose an external pond filter?

First, find the volume of your chosen pond.

Second, make adjustments to the volume based on location and depth. If it’s located in full sunlight, add 25%. If it is shallow, 2 feet or less average depth, add 25%. If it is located in full sunlight and has an average depth of 2 feet or less, add 50% to the volume.

Third, figure the minimum size of filter needed by dividing the adjusted volume by the maximum number of hours you need to clean the adjusted volume. The water should be completely filtered every three hours or less. So, divide the adjusted volume by three.

Where do you install an external pond filter?

Besides being located outside of the pond, you will need to install your filter in a level spot, as close to the elevation of the water level of the pond as possible. An external filter can be partially buried, hidden under rocks or landscaping or even placed on a table or structure near the pond.
