What to Expect from a Pond Filter
Just mention the
term “pond filters” to a novice and they
envision crystal clear ponds with Koi chasing
each other in pristine waters.
While it is true that pond
filters will provide a level of cleanliness to
your pond, it is important to know that a pond
filter is not a magic bullet that covers all
issues related to pond cleanliness. Let’s
discover exactly what pond filter can and cannot
do.
The Cans
Pond filters protect your pump by blocking
debris from congesting the system. They also
reduce the growth of string algae, traps
suspended particles, dissolves fish waste and
removes a portion of that waste from the water.
There are a variety of pond filters that include
in-line, intake, submersed, and external. When
combined these filters can do a remarkable job
in making sure your pond is attractive and
clean. The rule of thumb is the larger the
filter the more complete the cleansing of your
pond.
All of these “Cans” are contingent on whether
the filters are functioning appropriately and do
not need additional human attention.
The Cannots
A pristine pond cannot be achieved by pond
filters alone. Many new pond owners would like
their pond to have the same purity of view that
they find in the home aquarium, however this is
simply asking too much from current pond
filters.
The Human Connection
Pond filters will require human intervention
because they’ll need to be cleaned and inspected
for appropriate function and overall
effectiveness. Some pond owners may not like the
hassle of cleaning the pond, but the good news
is, the bigger the pond the less cleaning is
ultimately required.
Clear Understanding
Knowing what a pond filter can and cannot do
will be a tremendous asset when seeking to
understand what you will need to do to assist
this constantly used element in your home pond
environment.
