Chemical and UV Filters
When you look into
purchasing pond filters, you will be looking at
four specific filtration types: Mechanical,
biological, chemical and UV.
This article focuses on
the last two types of pond filters.
Chemical Pond Filters
When you are dealing with chemical pond filters,
you are looking at a filter media that purifies
the pond water by chemically binding harmful
chemicals in it to the filter itself. When you
utilize these types of pond filters, you are
effectively removing harmful items from the
water, like chlorine, heavy metals, ammonia,
pesticides and other unwanted chemical
impurities. Having chemical pond filters will
help to keep the pond water clear and remove
much of the odor normally associated with ponds.
Chemical pond filters absorbs the above
chemicals through the use of activated carbon.
You can even clean that carbon in salt water for
use again and again. Make sure to take out your
chemical pond filter for cleaning, however,
because adding salt water to your pond can
actually release ammonia.
Some pond owners do not use chemical pond
filters if they are already using a large enough
biological filter (see part I of this article).
Those pond owners that choose to use both
together do get pond water that is virtually
harmful chemical free, though. You may also
choose to use a chemical pond filter until a
biological filter matures.
UV Pond Filters
Ultraviolet radiation is what these types of
pond filters use to kill harmful items.
Pathogens, fungi and algae can be eliminated
from a pond by using UV. pond filters. An UV.
pond filter can also help minimize ICH and fungi
in your pond that can cause diseases in the fish
you stock in your pond. It is normally best to
use UV. pond filters in addition to other types
of pond filters, as they are not as effective at
removing string algae, blue-green algae and
larger parasites.
When creating your outdoor water area, using a
variety of the pond filters available will lead
to the cleanest and healthiest pond possible.
